signs not in English

Outside of major tourist areas, almost all signs are in Hindi, not English. This complicates navigation. Few road sign are in English. Most signs in bus and railway stations are in Hindi.
Fortunately, the numbers are generally clearly distinguishable, and you often need to go by the numbers that match what you think that they should be. Railway conductors and the ticket takers on buses are quite good at interpreting the mispronunciations of place names the I struggle to pronounce. Many people on the streets just look at you with a blank look, then point in some random direction.
