Bikaner is a town on the north western edge of India. Fifty kilometers of desert lies between Bikaner and Pakistan. As with much of this section of India, Bikaner had its times of wealth and power, as the shifting fates of winners and losers brought kings with wealth and power to build grand forts and palaces. Some of the newer palaces in India that are in good shape have been converted into "heritage hotels" for five star living like a king for a price. For me, Bikaner was not a very interesting or engaging town, so after a day, I decided to head south to Jaisalmer, another town on the desert's edge.
