car and driver

In Delhi I tried to make the train reservations for my travels in Rajasthan, the dry desert region to the west, bordering Pakistan. I had trouble getting the reservations that I wanted, and I was talked into renting a car and driver. My understanding was that I would have a private car and driver at my command 24 hours a day, that I could go anywhere whenever I wanted. Well, it didn't quite work out that way and after a few disputes, we terminated the deal, and I continued on my own, on buses and trains. But, while I had the driver, we visited his home in the country where I stayed one night and had breakfast.

I would have thought that India would be more mechanized. The rural areas appear more third world than Mexico, while the cities have the modern technologies. Quite a dichotomy?
Are there areas of modern farming?
