Hampi is a tourist magnet in south central India. In 1336, the town of Vijayangar was founded and grew to be a major trading center, and the largest Hindu empire, with over a half million people living in and around the town. In the ancient Hindu epic, Ramayana, this area was called Kishkinda, and was the home of the monkey gods. The area has an other-worldly feel to it, with the mix of local villagers, tourists, large granite boulders (similar to Jushua Tree Park in south central California), sprawling exotic ruins, a river, banana plantations, rice paddies, and a full cast of characters.
